Epimedium
Barrenworts bring life to the shady and semi-shady spots of the garden where many other plants struggle. These reliable perennials are perfect for planting under the canopies of trees or larger shrubs. There, they gradually form a dense ground cover that hides bare soil and looks very natural. The biggest attraction of barrenworts is their variability. In spring, they delight with a flood of tiny flowers that have a fragile appearance. During the season, the interestingly shaped leaves take over the leading role. They often change color from spring reddish tones through deep green summer colors to autumn bronze shades. For good growth, they mainly need permeable soil with plenty of humus. Once they are well-rooted, they can easily handle the occasional drought that commonly occurs under large trees. For us at Loukykvět, barrenworts are an absolute staple when planting shady corners, where they eventually create a long-lived and almost maintenance-free carpet.
